Top 10 favorite books of all time

Lately, I have been thinking about the books that have influenced me the most. I grew up reading everything I could put my hands on – both at home and at the library. There was no Goodreads to guide me through the process of choosing books.

Things have changed. I have slowly but surely turned into a picky reader. I am checking book reviews online and second-guessing books with very low ratings. So, this year I have decided not to focus so much on the book reviews but discover new books with an open mind.

My reading habits have changed but I still appreciate the books that have influenced my thinking and philosophy of life. I have not included the Bible in this list since it is more than a mere book for me.

Here are my top 10 favorite books (+quotes):

  1. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini – “It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime…”
  2.  1Q84 by Haruki Murakami – “If you can love someone with your whole heart, even one person, then there’s salvation in life. Even if you can’t get together with that person.”
  3. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo – “One drop of wine is enough to redden a whole glass of water.”
  4. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova – “Festina Lente (Hurry in slowly)”
  5. The Iron Candlestick by Dimitur Talev – “One should not and can not live only for himself.”
  6. My name is Red by Orhan Pamuk – “I don’t want to be a tree; I want to be its meaning.”
  7. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien – “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
  8. Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe – “The longest way must have its close – the gloomiest night will wear on to a morning.”
  9. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery – “It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”
  10. Rising Strong by Brené Brown – “Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.”
